In Ed-0: Zombie UprisingJapan is invaded by an army of a million zombies during the Edo period, the period between 1603 and 1868 when the Tokugawa family ruled and the country was isolated from the rest of the world. Play as a samurai, sumo wrestler or ninja and battle an overwhelming number of zombies in this Oedo Panic Rogue Action game, coming to Xbox Series X|S on July 13th, 2023. What kind of game is this Ed-0: Zombie Uprising? Toshi Otsuka, the game’s producer by D3PUBLISHER, explains: “This game is an indie game that combines the excitement of extreme challenges typical of classic turn-based roguelike games with realistic graphics typical of eye-popping 3D action games .” At the beginning of the stage, you are so weak that even a single zombie is too much for you, and you often have to use stealth to avoid confrontations. As the game progresses through the middle and end stages, the gameplay changes entirely, allowing you to gain power faster and enjoy the battle more easily.
“Due to the randomly changing maps and other factors, there is no set strategy or situation, and the best build must be inspired by the items available locally. The player will feel a strong sense of accomplishment and exhilaration when a build he or she has improvised fits together well and delivers impressive results,” said Masaru Oochi, Game Director of LANCARSE, the studio developing the game. “Even though the overall difficulty of the game is a bit high, players with less rogue experience can still enjoy it and progress through the stages if they take their time, as they can obtain permanent boosts through the use of virtues and money that they can acquire with can take home.” They die or finish a dungeon at their base.”
There are tons of builds in this game, and Toshi says, “From start to finish, we’ve always kept that in mind when creating builds. Masaru adds: “The zombie hordes are designed to prevent active players from using their player skills alone to overcome difficult situations. The team is very happy with the game’s unique EDO shader. As the theme of the game is set in Edo period Japan, this feature allows players to experience a beautifully crafted Japanese world that has never been seen before. “Originally we didn’t have this feature at all,” explains Toshi, “we implemented this shader later in development, so it was more of an added bonus.” Masaru follows with a comment. “The EDO shader was actually implemented by a programmer with a penchant for the Edo flavor without telling the graphics team, who care a lot about visuals. Now that the mystery is out, I hope everyone really enjoys the vibrant survival style of ukiyo-e (a genre of Japanese art).”
Finally, one of the details of the worldview is the miraculous amalgamation of Edo and zombies. One of the things that struggled to come into focus at the beginning of the project was the crazy idea of an Edo period zombie game brought to us by D3PUBLISHER. Since we figured it wouldn’t be much fun if Commodore Perry only brought zombies, we instead introduced the Zombie Industrial Revolution, a ridiculous but extreme attack by modified zombies. We hear that people other than Japanese are not that familiar with seclusion and Commodore Perry, but it is a historical fact that Japan was indeed closed to the outside world during the Edo period. It is also a historical fact that Commodore Perry forced Japan to open its borders to the outside world. “The reason for the isolation of Japan at that time was different from the one in the game, namely the spread of the zombie virus,” explains Toshi, “but now I think that everyone can identify with the goal of the game, which is to overcome it.” the deadly and unwanted virus!”
“This title is both a roguelike and an action game. If you can win the game with your action skills alone, you can do just that without having to think about any of the details. Of course, you can also play as a runaway, returning to your base each time and continuing to strengthen yourself until you become too strong. You can work slowly on your build, or you can play for fun, or you can play to win!” says Masaru. “We wanted to express a unique gaming experience and hope that you will find and enjoy your own playstyle as much as possible,” Toshi continued.
